Most people searching for one call it "the white curved wall". That is a better name for it than cyclorama, and it describes exactly what makes it useful.

The short answer
  • A cyclorama is a wall that curves into the floor with no corner, so the background has no visible edge.
  • That solves three things: full-length shots with no line behind the ankles, one-click background removal, and changing the backdrop colour with light instead of paint.
  • QAR 300 an hour at Ottora Studio, seats 10. That is QAR 50 more than a sofa setup.
  • Worth it for product, catalogue, full-length and anything getting a background replaced later.
  • Not worth it for waist-up talking heads or podcasts — a cyc behind two people talking looks clinical.

The problem it solves

In an ordinary room, the floor meets the wall at a right angle. Light collects in that corner and draws a hard horizontal line across your background — right at ankle height, which is precisely where it is most visible in a full-length shot.

You can fight it. People do, with paper rolls taped down and a lot of retouching. It works until someone steps back and creases the paper, and then it works for nobody for the rest of the day.

A cyclorama curves through that join. The floor bends up into the wall over a radius of a metre or so, and the two surfaces become one continuous plane. There is no corner, so there is no line, so the background does not end anywhere the camera can see.

Cross-section comparison: an ordinary room where floor meets wall at a right angle creating a visible shadow line, versus a cyclorama where the floor curves smoothly into the wallSEEN FROM THE SIDEOrdinary roomthe line you have to retouch outsubjectShadow gathers in the corner and reads as a hard edge at ankle height.Cycloramasubjectno corner, so no lineOne continuous surface. The background has no edge for the camera to find.
The whole idea, in cross-section. The curve is typically about a metre in radius — enough that no camera angle from floor level finds a corner.

What that lets you do

Shoot full-length. Shoes included, no seam behind the ankles. This is the reason fashion, dance and sport shoots ask for a cyclorama specifically, and it is the thing no amount of retouching replaces convincingly.

Cut the background out in seconds. One flat, evenly lit tone means a selection tool does in a click what would otherwise take an hour of drawing around hair and heels. For a catalogue of forty products that difference is the whole afternoon, which is the arithmetic behind shooting a catalogue in one day.

Change the background colour with light. A white cyc lit with coloured light becomes any colour you want, and you can change it between shots without repainting anything. Brand colour in the morning, neutral white after lunch.

Make a small room look infinite. With no visible edges, the viewer has no reference for how big the space is. A modest room photographs as a large one.

When it is worth QAR 300 an hour

The cyclorama at Ottora Studio is QAR 300 an hour — QAR 50 more than the sofa setups and QAR 100 more than the bean bags. It earns that in four situations:

  • Product and catalogue work. Set the light once, leave the camera where it is, swap the product. Forty items in an afternoon is a normal pace, not an ambitious one.
  • Full-length anything. Outfits, dance, sport, movement, anything where feet are in frame.
  • Content that needs a background replaced later. Green screen is one way; a clean white cyc that keys just as well and still looks like a real place if you decide not to replace it is usually the better bet.
  • Anything with a brand colour. Light the wall in the brand colour and every shot is on-brand without a set build.

When it is not worth it

Be honest about this, because QAR 100 an hour adds up over a six-hour day.

  • Talking head, waist up. Any background works. Book a sofa setup and put the difference towards a second camera, which will do more for the finished video.
  • Podcasts. A cyclorama behind two people talking looks clinical. Warmth is the point of a podcast set, and a plain infinite white wall is the opposite of warm.
  • Anything where you want the room to look like a place. The cyc deliberately has no character. If you want character, the Retro setup does more for QAR 50 an hour less.
A useful test: if the finished shot would still work with a plain wall behind it, you do not need a cyclorama. If the shot needs feet, or needs the background gone, you do.

How to light one

The single most common mistake is one light trying to do both jobs. It cannot. Light the wall and the subject separately, and the whole thing becomes easy.

Top-down lighting plan for a cyclorama: two lights aimed across the wall from either side, one key light on the subject, subject standing one and a half metres forward of the wallLIGHTING PLAN, SEEN FROM ABOVEthe wallwall lightwall lightsubject1.5 m minimumkey lightcamera
Two lights raking across the wall from the sides, one key on the subject. This is what stops the background going grey in the corners while the subject stays properly lit.

Four rules that cover most of it:

Stand forward. A metre and a half off the wall, minimum. Closer and your own shadow lands on the background you are trying to keep clean, and no amount of wall light removes it.

Overexpose the wall slightly relative to the subject if you want a true white. About one stop brighter than the subject is the usual starting point. Much more than that and light spills back onto the subject's shoulders and haloes them.

Take your shoes off, or bring clean ones. The floor is the background. Every scuff shows at full resolution and every scuff has to be retouched out later, one image at a time.

Check the corners, not the centre. The middle of a cyc is almost always fine. The corners are where uneven lighting shows, and they are what makes a background look grey instead of white.

Cyclorama or green screen?

These get compared constantly and they are answers to slightly different questions.

White cycloramaGreen screen
Usable without replacing the backgroundYes — it looks like a real placeNo
Keying qualityGood, if evenly litBest

For most brand and product work the cyclorama wins on the last row alone. Committing at the shoot to replacing every background is a decision you will regret roughly one time in four.

Frequently asked

What is a cyclorama wall?

A studio wall that curves smoothly into the floor with no corner between them, so the background appears continuous and edgeless in every frame.

What is the difference between a cyclorama and a green screen?

A cyclorama is a physical curved surface, usually white. A green screen is a colour chosen because software can remove it. A white cyclorama can be lit to key almost as cleanly, and it still looks like somewhere real if you decide not to replace the background at all.

How much is a cyclorama wall in Doha?

QAR 300 an hour at Ottora Studio in Abu Hamour. Three hours takes 15% off, six hours takes 25% — off the combined rate including any add-ons.

How many people fit?

Up to ten.

Is the lighting included?

Yes. The lighting is set before you arrive and adjustable while you are there. Cameras and an operator are separate — QAR 300 an hour each, both optional.

Can I paint it or change the colour?

No painting. Change it with light instead, which is faster, reversible, and does not cost a repaint between bookings.

Do I need to bring a photographer?

Not necessarily. For straightforward product work the lighting is already set and a competent person from your own team can shoot it. An operator is QAR 300 an hour if nobody wants to be responsible for focus.

How far should the subject stand from the wall?

At least a metre and a half. Closer and the subject's shadow falls on the background.
